Specification for Manual Handling Training
Trainee Profile
Members of staff who carry out any transporting or supporting of a load, by one or more employees, and includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying, or moving a load which, by reason of its characteristics or of unfavourable ergonomic conditions involves risk, particularly of back injury, to employees as part of their daily duties.
Aims
To provide trainees with the knowledge to conduct all manual handling activities in a manner that will prevent injury.
Objectives
- Understand the consequences of incorrect lifting
- Understand the mechanics of the spine and muscular system
- Understand the 8 principles of safe lifting
Training Duration
- Three Hours
Training Approach
Classroom based theory Module which includes:
- Law
- Anatomy
- Fitness
- Hazardous loads
- Specific Manual Handling hazards
- Means to avoid or reduce manual handling
- Good handling techniques & practice
- Dealing with unfamiliar loads
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Good housekeeping
Practical Module which includes:
- Lifting to and from the ground (trainee)
- Lifting to and from a bench (trainee)
- Lifting to and from a height (Demonstration)
- Pulling (trainee)
- Pushing (trainee)
- Team Lift
Assessment and Certification
- Practical assessment during practical module
